Friday, November 05, 2004 - ALTADENA -- Bubbles, loud music, smoke and finally anarchy ruled at the 28th
Doo Dah Queen Tryouts on Thursday, but from the confusion emerged Cherry Capri, the 2004 Doo Dah Queen.
The 35-year-old Toluca Lake resident sang a song nobody heard and wooed judges with her answers to
inappropriate questions, beating out first runner ups Octavia and Michelle Millsand second runner up Princess Juliana,
13, who sang "He's a Tramp" from the movie "Lady and the Tramp," then told judges she had to go home and do her homework.
"I am completely head over heels in ecstasy," said Capri."
She will reign over the Nov. 21 parade, which begins at 11:30 a.m. and proceeds south on Raymond Avenue at Memorial Park
then west on Colorado Boulevard.
It may have been the chilly weather, predictions of rain or post-election fatigue,
but the crowd at this year's event was smaller than usual.
This was the first queen tryout at Zorthian Ranch
since the ranch's owner, Jerry Zorthian, died last year. His wife, Dabney, will be the grand marshal of this year's
parade.
The Light-Bringer Project, a nonprofit Pasadena arts group, organizes the zany event, which is a spoof
of the venerable Rose Parade.
This year's contestants included favorites such as The 2nd Hand Rose Queen,
the Don King of Candy, Naughty Mickie, Ms. Viola, belly dancers and several disgruntled men who complained the event
is rigged because no man is ever selected queen.
