A Pocketful of Prose for Every Passing Season

November 30, 2018 by ~ C. Capri

I am happy to share that I have released a wonderful book of children’s poetry just in time for the holidays. If you are looking for a unique book for a child that you cherish, please consider reading The Wheel of the Year to them.

The Golden book style illustrations are a pure joy to view by the talented illustrator, Sneha Paradeshi. I introduced her to the work Mid Century Modern illustrators, Alice and Martin Provensen, and boy oh boy, did she she get inspiration. I also think she may have channeled the work of Mary Blair while she was drawing.

In this collection of thirty four poems, I recall the simple pleasures of children as the year unfolds, from seeing flowers burst out in Spring, to imagining magical lands in Autumn. While some of the poems are pure fun, many of the poems also encourage traditional values of love and respect.
And nothing says the holidays like happy little monkeys trimming palm trees over a thatched little grass shack tiki hut!

Happy Seasons!

Summer Vacation Road Trip Videos

May 23, 2016 by ~ C. Capri

Back in olden times, people would take their Super 8 cameras along with them on vacation. Because of the nature of the medium, the clips that were shot were usually rather short in nature. The film was precious and the processing was expensive, so quick little clips were strung together to create moving picture montages of memories.

A few years back, I drove across country and shot short little snippets in beside my favorite landmarks. I posted several of them back in 2013. I also also hired talented stop motion artists to create stop frame animation titles for them! There are pistachios spell out, “Cherry goes Nuts!” Little pebbles spelling, “Presenting Ms. President.” Pink eraser shavings that say, “Big Mistake in D.C.” There are also green peas, candy sprinkles, metal shavings, legos, grass clippings, plastic spoons, lava rocks, and more… And of course a little of the classic Art Clokey Gumby style Claymation. You will just have to watch them to see all the fun!

Just last week, like finding a treasure trove of Super 8 canisters at an estate sale, I just unearthed a bunch more clips!!! I will be adding them all this week to my existing playlist on YouTube. Some are educational, others are just plain silly for silliness sake. I do hope that you will enjoy them and that they will encourage you to go out and create a Road Trip Video Adventure of your own!

And remember to keep your clips quick and to the point so that your viewers will have more time to see more of them.

Happy Gratitude Day

November 26, 2015 by ~ C. Capri

Regardless of it’s historic roots, I like to think of Thanksgiving as the perfect official Gratitude Day. Today, I am grateful for good friends and crazy-good crazy-food.

For those of you who are not familiar with the strange custom of stuffing food things inside of other food things, there is a retro recipe called the Turducken. It’s a chicken stuffed into duck stuffed into turkey. Being a vegetarian myself, it’s not something I would personally eat, but I do appreciate the kitsch factor of doing something like this.

To avoid having to take a slice of 3 different pies and a piece of cake, my friend, Charles Phoenix gave us his fabulous Cherpumple – an apple pie stuffed in a pumpkin pie in a cherry pie in a giant cake!

Now vegetables also have nice neat little cavities that you can stuff other things into. Witness the stuffed potato, the stuffed mushroom and stuffed squash. So over the coming holidays, instead of the de rigor veggie turkey or Tofurky, try this vegetable-based creative meal instead. It comes to us from Dan Pashman from the Cooking Channel. It’s a SquashLeekOtato Roast!

“I realized I could cut the vegetables in half and scoop out the insides, creating a cavity for the next vegetable. I started with the biggest butternut squash I could find, and then looked for vegetables that might fit inside it. Eggplant was a natural choice, then zucchini after that. And to fit into a zucchini? A tiny scallion, obvs. After scooping out the insides—not asuper easy task, but totally doable—I was left with a big bowl of vegetable flesh. So I went #wasteless and decided to turn it all into a stuffing that I could spread between each vegetable layer.”
